What is Mounjaro (Tirzepatide)

Written by Dr Girouard M.D.

Updated January 23, 2024

We are very excited to be able to offer Mounjaro as part of the wide range of tools available at the Girouard to help you achieve your best life.

But what is Mounjaro and what is it’s active components that make it helpful to make you healthier and happier?

What is Tirzepatide?

Tirzepatide or Zepbound is classified as a dual glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist.

This means that tirzepatide affects two different hormones involved in regulating blood sugar levels. This dual action increases insulin secretion and reduces glucagon production, leading to improved blood sugar control.

In addition to its blood sugar-lowering effects, tirzepatide has demonstrated the ability to promote weight loss.

Ok but take a step back…

What is GIP?

GIP is a hormone produced in the gut, specifically in the K cells of the small intestine. It plays a role in regulating blood sugar (glucose) levels in response to the ingestion of food.

GIP is released in response to the presence of nutrients in the digestive system, particularly glucose and fats. When GIP is released, it stimulates the pancreas to release insulin, which helps to lower blood sugar levels.

The term “dual GIP” refers to the ability of certain medications, like Mounjaro (Tirzepatide), to interact with the GIP receptors in two ways:

  • Stimulation of Insulin Release:  An increase in insulin release from the pancreas.
  • Inhibition of Glucagon Production: Dual GIP medications can also inhibit the production of glucagon, another hormone produced by the pancreas. Glucagon typically raises blood sugar levels by stimulating the liver to release glucose into the bloodstream. Inhibiting glucagon production helps to lower blood sugar levels.

By targeting both the insulin-stimulating and glucagon-inhibiting effects of GIP, these medications aim to provide better blood sugar control.

Does it help with weight loss?

When blood sugar levels are stable and not excessively high, the body is less likely to store excess glucose as fat.

Additionally, lower blood sugar levels can reduce sugar cravings and overeating, which can contribute to weight loss.

Also by stimulating both GIP and GLP-1 receptors, can have a direct impact on appetite control.

GLP-1, in particular, has been shown to reduce feelings of hunger and increase feelings of fullness. This can lead to decreased food intake and a reduced desire to eat.

There are also many other ways that Tirepatide and thus Mounjaro can help you.
